Sodium formate, contains two crystalline waters in its crystals, hence it is also known as sodium formate dihydrate, sodium formate dihydrate, or sodium citrate dihydrate. Sodium formate is the simplest organic carboxylate, which is a white crystal or powder with a slight formic acid odor. Slightly deliquescent and hygroscopic. Easy to dissolve in about 1.3 parts of water and glycerol, slightly soluble in ethanol and octanol, insoluble in ether. Its aqueous solution is alkaline. When heated, sodium formate decomposes into hydrogen gas and sodium oxalate, followed by the formation of sodium carbonate. Sodium formate is mainly used in the production of insurance powder, oxalic acid, and formic acid. Used as a camouflage acid in the chrome tanning process in the leather industry, as a catalyst and stabilizing synthetic agent, and as a reducing agent in the printing and dyeing industry.

Sodium formate is produced by reacting a solution of carbon monoxide and sodium hydroxide at 160-200 ºC and a pressure of 2MPa, followed by sulfuric acid hydrolysis and distillation to obtain the final formic acid.
 

 

  

Sodium formate is the by-products of neopentyl glycol, pentaerythritol, and trimethylolpropane with good quality.

Application

Used as a camouflage acid in the chrome tanning process in the leather industry, as a catalyst and stabilizing synthetic agent, and as a reducing agent in the printing and dyeing industry.
 

1.Used in the leather industry, the main uses are as follows:

(1) Mainly used for the production of formic acid, oxalic acid, and insurance powder, as well as for the production of dimethylformamide. Also used in the pharmaceutical and printing and dyeing industries.;
(2) Used as a reagent, disinfectant, and mordant for the determination of phosphorus and arsenic;
(3) Used as a preservative. Application 4: Used for alkyd resin coatings, plasticizers, and high strength;

(4)Used as an additive in explosives, acid resistant materials, aviation lubricants, and adhesives.

2. Dye industry
Sodium formate can be used to manufacture various dyes, such as linolenic acid dyes, phenyl dyes, etc. In addition, it can also serve as a catalyst and stabilizer for polymer compounds such as cellulose ethers and polymers.

3. Industrial sector
Sodium formate can be used to prepare formic acid and oxalates, as well as to prepare chemicals such as sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide. In addition, it can also be used as a cleaning agent and metal surface polishing agent for industrial purposes
